A homegrown education leader, Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell has served Oakland Unified School District for 25 years in various roles. She has led the building of a nationally-recognized Community Schools model, earning OUSD a $66 million Community Schools state grant.
Johnson-Trammell led the District’s celebrated pandemic response by providing digital access, healthy meals, and community learning hubs. Her collaboration with Oakland Undivided provided low-income families a computer, wireless internet, and technology support, increasing the District's student home digital access by 86%.
She facilitated the advent of community-based TK-2 literacy tutoring, expansion of career pathways and Dual Enrollment, and Grow Your Own retention of educators of color. All that has increased achievement in early literacy, college-ready high school graduation rates, and retention of African African and Latinx educators.
Dr. Johnson-Trammell has a Communications Degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Master’s and Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of California.
