CARL “THE REV” WHEELER

Grammy Award winning Bay Area legend, Carl “The Rev” Wheeler began his storied career at age eleven as a regular cast member of the local hit children’s show, “Just Kidding”, where he sang and played keyboard, until age sixteen. Recognized as a top piano/organ/synth player, he is also a highly sought after composer, producer, and vocal arranger.  A founding member of the highly successful band Tony Toni Tone`, Carl also toured for twenty-three years with Frankie Beverly and Maze and is the musical director for the bands current farewell tour. Carl recently rejoined the original band members of the Tony’s, 3TOB, and released new music to critical acclaim. 

 

Carl is well versed in all music styles from rock to soul to R&B to pop to gospel to hip hop to jazz.  He has recorded, produced and performed with several superstar acts including but not limited to Prince, Sheila E., Green Day, Walter and Edwin Hawkins, J. Spencer, Andre Crouch, Aretha Franklin and Lionel Richie, and also performed at the White House for the Celebration of Gospel hosted by President and Mrs. Obama. Blessed with perfect pitch, Carl can arrange vocals without the assistance of musical instruments, “a creative genius, Carl has a knack for knowing exactly what each section of a song needs, finding perfect balances in his mixes where all parts are clearly heard… he is a master of hooks and ear candy excelling at background vocal arrangements by building harmonies that create unforgettable musical experiences,” a sentiment shared by every artist who has been blessed to work with him. 

 

The son and brother of Oakland preachers, Carl was raised on gospel music, directing his first choir at the tender age of eight, establishing himself as a gospel music staple in the industry for the past forty plus years. He regularly produces and records local and national gospel artists in FM Studios, which he shares with his business partner Tommy McElroy, a producer of the super group, En Vogue.

Carl’s success can be equally attributed to his humble spirit and infectious smile.  His kindness is as legendary as his talents, no matter how bright his star shines he is always willing to bless a local church during Sunday service because he truly loves the Lord and he loves sharing his talent to uplift and encourage. 

 

Carl has been married to the lovely Deborah Wheeler for twenty-four years, has eight wonderful children and when he is not doing music, Carl is an ardent Warriors and Oakland A’s fan, a political enthusiast and bakes incredible sweet potato pie, makes amazingly authentic gumbo and everything soul food!
