Maximus Michael Simmons is a dedicated youth leader, public servant, and writer, currently serving his second term as the Student Director for the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), representing over 34,000 students. At just sixteen years old, Maximus began his tenure on the OUSD Board of Education, where he has consistently championed student-centered decision-making and advocated for policies rooted in team building, proactivity, self-reflection, and restorative justice.
During his time on the Board, Maximus has authored a resolution that aims to reallocate $1 million in funding to expand restorative justice initiatives across the district (soon to be voted on). He also played a key role in improving communication between the district and student representatives, promoting greater transparency and collaboration.
Beyond the school district, Maximus serves in the Office of Mayor Barbara Lee as her Youth Representative, mentee, and Chair of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council. In this role, he continues his mission to amplify youth voices and drive community impact. Most notably, he founded and orchestrates the “Help a Teacha Out” initiative, which selects one OUSD school each month to receive community-funded classroom supplies. In just three months, the initiative has supported over 200 classrooms.
Looking ahead, Maximus and the Youth Council are organizing a community health and wellness fundraiser led by the Oakland Ballers’ athletic trainer on November 15th, with a goal of raising $1,000 to continue their impactful work.
Ultimately, through every role he holds, Maximus Michael Simmons remains steadfast in his commitment to ensuring that youth have a seat—and a voice—at every table of power, decision, and policy-making.
