With over 40 years of experience in the field of education, Sonya Simril has dedicated her life to
the academic, social, and spiritual growth of children. As principal of Saint Leo the Great School
in Oakland, California, for over 30 years, she has led an award-winning educational institution
committed to excellence, equity, and faith-based learning.
Sonya’s unwavering passion for children extends beyond the classroom. Her impact is evident
through the lasting relationships she has built with her students—many of whom continue to seek
her guidance and share their milestones long after graduation.
Equally devoted to serving seniors, Sonya sat on the Board of Trustees for St. Mary’s Center, a
community of hope, justice, and healing for at-risk seniors and preschoolers in the heart of
Oakland. Her other board affiliations include the Girl Scouts of Northern California, Carondelet
High School, Saint Leo the Great School, Family Aid for Catholic Education (FACE), and past
board member of Saint Mary’s College High School, and the Oakland Zoo.
A lifelong advocate for service and leadership, Sonya is an active life member of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated. She is also a proud
member of the Alameda Contra Costa (CA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, where she has
held leadership roles, including serving on the National Executive Council.
Sonya holds dual bachelor’s degrees in business and education, a dual teaching credential, and a
master’s degree in educational leadership.
A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Sonya now resides in Oakland, California, with her husband,
David. She treasures time with her family, which includes daughter, Serita, and grandchildren—
Victoria, Corey, and Karlie.
